(NYC) On Friday, I felt sad once again over yet another school shooting. This is not a family issue this is a society issue. This affects all of us. Families and communities become destroyed. The school which use to be a safe haven for children becomes less safe. Young people should be living their lives freely worrying about exams, school sporting events, and being with their friends. Not fearful about what’s lurking in the hallways.
Young people have always felt more comfortable confiding in their friends rather than family members. With social media playing such a big role in their socialization they now have a new outlet to voice their hate and their unhappiness. I believe that it is the obligation of those individuals that are following these young people on social media to speak up when you see something that may be inappropriate or words that don’t sit well with you. Words are powerful and when we are troubled sometimes the easiest way to deal with our problems is to communicate thru writing as opposed to verbally. If you look back at some of the writings of these individuals you will see their desperation. Instead of looking at these conversations over social media with such lackadaisical intent stop and take notice. It’s our responsibility to look out for and help other people. Don’t wait until it’s too late and you have regrets. Become the change you want to see around you.
