City Sells $755K in Land to U. of C. for $1 to Build New Woodlawn Charter

HYDE PARK — The University of Chicago got a good deal on Wednesday, snapping up $755,000 in city-owned land for $1 to build its new Woodlawn charter school building.

In October, the university revealed plans for the $27.5 million new building to replace its existing home in the former Wadsworth Elementary School building at 6420 S. University Ave., but it needed city land to start construction.

On Wednesday, the City Council approved selling 19 city-owned parcels along 63rd Street between University and Greenwood avenues for the 29,000-square-foot new building.
