Artists in South Africa

Cape Town sits along the rugged southern coast of South Africa — home to the largest HIV/AIDS epidemic in the world. Despite facing massive political and public health challenges, the city of 3.7 million has evolved into a multicultural metropolis with a thriving art scene that has gained international renown. From the poverty-stricken Cape Flats to the affluent suburbs of the Atlantic Seaboard, we meet five young men and women: an opera singer, two street artists, a visual performer and a fashion designer. All members of a generation that came of age in the post-apartheid democracy, they have buoyed the entire culture through their talent and tireless ambition.
